The Orcas Center lobby will be the place to see the culmination of over fifty years of Frank Loudin’s imagination and artistic talents. From a sexy redhead to rusty pick-ups and weathered barns; from miniature waterfalls with hidden fairy castles to aerobatic biplanes, Frank’s work leads us through a world of insatiable observation and cultivated imagination. Looking through this collection of splendid watercolors, even the casual observer will be struck by the variety of stories that filter through the display. ‘GETTING ALONG FAMOUSLY’ ON-STAGE AT THE GRANGE THIS WEEKEND

The Actors Theater of Orcas Island announces five performances of “Getting Along Famously” by Michael Jacobs. This play is a fun, light-hearted look at what happens when Harry Leeby, the worlds most successful paperback novel writer wants to write a “good” novel. Harry Leeby has written eighteen Axel Troy mysteries which have spawned movies, TV, fame and fortune. But Axel is invincible, much too clever for him enemies so the only one left to kill him is Harry. This is the story of what happens when he does. Only 3 more performances! All performances will be at 7:30 pm at the Grange. This script-in-hand production is suitable for all ages. INDIAN ISLAND MARINE HEALTH OBSERVATORY FIELD RESEARCH DAYS
(Saturday, August 7 – Tuesday, August 10)
Join local scientists and community volunteers at Eastsound Waterfront Park in conducting surveys of fish and intertidal animals on low tide days during the summer. Learn about the unique marine life of our home waterfront. Final Research Dates for This Season: Saturday (9 am- 1 pm); Sunday (9 am – 12 noon); Monday (10 am – 12 noon); and Tuesday (11 am – 1 pm). If you are interested in identifying the forage fish in the eel grass meadows, fish seining will take place on Saturday only at 11:00 and noon. Wear appropriate footwear for walking to the island (wet sand, gravel, shallow water), and come on down to the beach!

SAN JUAN COUNTY PIONEER’S PICNIC @ ORCAS ISLAND MUSEUM

* Nancy Wang will tell the story ‘Bittersweet’, her journey to understand her mother by researching her mother’s family of 4 American generations and discovering that a daughter’s perspective is limiting.
* Ginni Stern will tell the story of her 15 annual trips to Auschwitz, going to explore her personal family history, and learning the limits of compassion and the malleable boundaries of our humanity.
* Robert Kikuchi-Yngojo will tell the magical story ‘Butterfly’ – the story of his mother?s immigration from the Philippines to San Francisco when she was 5 years old. He will also sing songs he wrote of cultural identity and the journey of self-awareness through the Asian American experience.
* Anji Ringzin will recite the poetry of the Sufi poet Rumi, celebrating the heart journey of love.

GIVE FAMILY CAMP AT FOUR WINDS * WESTWARD HO A TRY!
(Friday, September 10 – Sunday, September 12)
If you have ever wondered what Four Winds Camp is like, this is your chance to give it a try. Family Camp wekend is a great way to get the feel of camp, meet some of the counselors, the director and assistant director and get the lay of the land. You’ll be able to participate in sailing canoeing, land sports, crafts, visit old & new haunts around Camp, or just hang out on Greenie Hill and listen to music. Children of all ages are welcome; however activities are geared toward camp-aged childre and older. There will be no childcare available. Cost of the wekend reunion is $200 per adult (16 and older) and $100 for children ages 7 – 15. Kids under 7 are free. This includes food, housing, and activities for the entire weekend! (08.05)

The Cancer Support Group meets the 2nd Thursday of each month at the Orcas Island Community Church Library at 7:00 pm. This month, on August 12th, Taryn Somers from the American Cancer Society will be sharing services and resources available to us living on the island. The group is open to anyone in the community who currently has cancer, is a cancer survivor, knows someone with cancer or is a caretaker. This is a monthly, no cost, confidential support group.

NORTHWEST AUTHOR TO SHARE BICYCLE ODYSSEY @ DARVILL’S BOOKSTORE

Robert M. Goldstein, author of Riding with Reindeer – A Bicycle Odyssey through Finland, Lapland, and Arctic Norway will be on Orcas Island to show slides of his trip and autograph copies of his new book. The Seattle-area author’s book chronicles his two month bicycle trip through barren land often inhabited only by reindeer. “I think everyone should go on a person epic once in a life time. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bike trip to the Arctic, but something where you challenge yourself a bit and learn something,” he said.

August 13 & 14 Doe Bay is hosting its annual music festival that draws a friendly Seattle crowd to the island – but no reason locals can’t get in on the fun! Technically, the event is SOLD OUT. But that is because we had to set a limit on how many cars and campers we can host. If you can get to Doe Bay Fest without a car and don’t need a place to sleep, we CAN sell you a ticket. WHALE OF A SHOW – TRYOUTS

The Whale of a Show is a great opportunity for kids to get on stage and perform their own unique act in front of a supportive audience. Performances can include song, dance, musical instruments, spoken word, or something of a unique nature that you choose! It is always a fun and entertaining show for all. ARTWORKS PRESENTS SCULPTURES BY MARIA PAPADEMETRIOU
(The month of August)
The Orcas Island Artworks features three dimensional work by Olga artist Maria Papademetriou through the month of August. Using found objects as a vocabulary of symbols and form, Maria has created iconic, shrine-like objects which she conceives as deities or nature spirits. Having grown up in the Greek Orthodox tradition, “objects used in ritual, such as shrines and personal altars, were ever present in my childhood and continue to occupy my creative consciousness.” Those who know and love Maria’s art from her many years at the Artworks will find this inspired body of work an exciting new development. The Artworks is open daily from 10 to 6.

ROSARIO MUSIC CONCERT AND HISTORICAL NARRATIVE
(Monday – Saturday at 4 pm)
Enjoy a presentation of music and photography that walks guests through the history of the Moran family and the Rosario estate with Christopher Peacock. Highlights of the presentation include the historic Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion’s 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ with the silent film, stories of the Mansion’s most colorful residents, and Christopher’s original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano.

JOURNEY STORIES UNDERWAY AT HISTORY MUSEUM

Our own local Orcas islanders’ Journey Stories, an addition to the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, will capture your attention! We are delighted to host the Journey Stories exhibit through August 29, 2010. Orcas Historical Museum is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
