‘PICTURING AMERICA’ ON EXHIBIT AT ORCAS CENTER

(Art Opening on Friday, February 5; opening reception 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm)

Orcas Center opens 2010 with a big new exhibit from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Tracing the history of America through artistic masterpieces, this exhibit reveals how great American art brings our story to life and helps insure that these ideals are studied, passed on and remembered. It will show through February. The exhibit is sponsored by the Palettes. The opening reception will feature local experts to talk about and answer questions about the work. (0121)

Crossroads Lecture Series:

Life in a Time of Pandemics: Influenza & other diseases that shape our future

(Friday, February 5; 7:30 pm @ the Orcas Center)

The current influenza pandemic seemed much less severe than was originally forecast. Were the risks exaggerated? Was treatment appropriately allocated? Frank James will address these questions and discuss how the risks from infectious diseases will affect our future. Dr. Frank James has been the Health Officer for San Juan County for 18 years. Tickets at the Library & Darvill’s Bookstore for $10 each. A limited number of complimentary tickets are available through the Library and the Senior Center.

THE DOE BAY CAFÉ WELCOMES ‘THE SOLVENTS’

Orcas Idol finale at orcas center

The Orcas Island Rowing Association presents I-MIRF 3!
(Sunday, February 7; from 2 pm to 4 pm @ Oddfellows Hall)
Come share some crazy fun at the third annual Island Madness Indoor Rowing Fest. We’ll be racing on stationary rowing machines, a.k.a. “ergs.” Come race — we’ll have events for every age and experience level (prior “erging” experience is helpful but not required). Or just come cheer the racers on as they bust a gut to go nowhere, fast! Free of charge for admission or racing.

TRACKER DOGS: SAVING KILLER WHALES – MARINE SCIENCE LECTURE

(Tuesday February 9 @ 7 pm – Camp Orkila)

We all can picture tracker dogs saving earthquake victims in Haiti, but saving killer whales? Katherine Ayres, a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Washington’s Center for Conservation Biology will explain how and why she is using tracker dogs to save endangered southern resident killer whales. Lectures are free. Please park in the upper parking lot at Camp Orkila. Shuttle service from the parking lot to the talk is available before and after the lecture. FREE.

CAFÉ OLGA RE-OPENS FOR THE 2010 SEASON

‘IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN’ SCREENING AT EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL

A Christian Lecture Series at the Orcas Island Community Church

(Saturday, February 13; 9 am @ the OICC sanctuary)

This lecture series intends to explore, in depth, topics of interest to Christians seeking a deeper understanding of their faith, its history and teachings. The next in the series is: Key Turning Points in Christian History, presented by Gary Roosma, a minister in the Christian Reformed Church and has served as a missionary-educator in Papua New Guinea and Malaysia, most recently as professor of history and missions at Sabah Theological Seminary. ACTORS THEATER ANNOUNCES ‘NOISES OFF’ PRODUCTION @ THE GRANGE

SAN JUAN NATURE INSTITUTE LECTURE SERIES

Seasonal sea ice cover and the production of walleye pollock in the Bering Sea: Implications of global warming. George Hunt, UW School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science will be the guest speaker at the second Arthur Whiteley Lecture offered to the public by San Juan Nature Institute in collaboration with UW Friday Harbor Labs.  There is no charge, though donations would be gratefully received.

ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS FEATURES LANDSCAPES BY BRUCE WILSON

The Artworks reopens for its 30th season featuring encaustic landscapes by Bruce Wilson. Bruce has been experimenting with mixing pigments and oil pastels into creamy consistencies and applying them to smooth gessoed surfaces under different thermal conditions. His landscapes have a surrealist, impressionist feel. His work will be on display through February and March. The Artworks is open daily from 10 to 6. (0204)

Healing Arts Center’s Christopher Evans Teaching at Orcas Senior Center

Christopher Evans will be offering Transformational Movement Lessons (TML’s) twice a week during the month of February.  Christopher, a licensed massage practitioner, just completed a three year training to be certified in the Anat Baniel Method, based on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. Participation in the class greatly enhances flexibility, strength, coordination and well being.  Cost for the 8 class series is $60.
