A fundraiser to benefit the School of the Salish Sea!

Warm up for Valentines Day with our sizzling hot salsa dance party, featuring Orcas’ own sizzling hot dancers Maria and Learner. The school is located in the Tracy Strong Lodge at Camp Orkila. ‘IN SEARCH OF BEETHOVEN’ SCREENING AT EMMANUEL EPISCOPAL

If you loved ‘In Search of Mozart,’ you’ll love this highly acclaimed, new feature-length film about the life of Ludwig van Beethoven (currently in theaters across the US and receiving excellent reviews). The film takes a comprehensive look at the composer’s life through historical research and Beethoven’s biography and letters, but with the emphasis always on the performance – and interpretation – of Beethoven’s music. A Christian Lecture Series at the Orcas Island Community Church

(Saturday, February 13; 9 am @ the OICC sanctuary)

This lecture series intends to explore, in depth, topics of interest to Christians seeking a deeper understanding of their faith, its history and teachings. The next in the series is: Key Turning Points in Christian History, presented by Gary Roosma, a minister in the Christian Reformed Church and has served as a missionary-educator in Papua New Guinea and Malaysia, most recently as professor of history and missions at Sabah Theological Seminary. The Moran Mansion Museum will reopen on Saturdays beginning on February 13, with a 4 pm Music Concert/Rosario History Program. $5 admission for the Music Concert & Program. ACTORS THEATER ANNOUNCES ‘NOISES OFF’ PRODUCTION @ THE GRANGE

(Kaleidoscope Sneak Preview Benefit on Thursday, February 18; other dates below)

Considered by many to be the best farce written in the past hundred years, ‘Noises Off’ features a cast of locals and is directed by Doug Bechtel. Proceeds on Thursday, February 18 go to Kaleidoscope. Tickets for the “Sneak Preview” are $25 including beverages & dessert. Purchase tix from Kaleidoscope Board Members and at Darvill’s. Other performances: Friday and Saturday (2/19 & 2/20), and Friday – Sunday (2/26 – 2/28). Tickets are $10 at Darvill’s and at the door. All performances start at 7:30 pm.

SAN JUAN NATURE INSTITUTE LECTURE SERIES

Seasonal sea ice cover and the production of walleye pollock in the Bering Sea: Implications of global warming. George Hunt, UW School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science will be the guest speaker at the second Arthur Whiteley Lecture offered to the public by San Juan Nature Institute in collaboration with UW Friday Harbor Labs. There is no charge, though donations would be gratefully received.

ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS FEATURES LANDSCAPES BY BRUCE WILSON

The Artworks reopens for its 30th season featuring encaustic landscapes by Bruce Wilson. Bruce has been experimenting with mixing pigments and oil pastels into creamy consistencies and applying them to smooth gessoed surfaces under different thermal conditions. His landscapes have a surrealist, impressionist feel. His work will be on display through February and March. The Artworks is open daily from 10 to 6. (0204)

Healing Arts Center’s Christopher Evans Teaching at Orcas Senior Center

Christopher Evans will be offering Transformational Movement Lessons (TML’s) twice a week during the month of February. Christopher, a licensed massage practitioner, just completed a three year training to be certified in the Anat Baniel Method, based on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais. ‘PICTURING AMERICA’ ON EXHIBIT AT ORCAS CENTER

Orcas Center opens 2010 with a big new exhibit from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Tracing the history of America through artistic masterpieces, this exhibit reveals how great American art brings our story to life and helps insure that these ideals are studied, passed on and remembered. · Wednesday, March 10 (3:45 pm – 5:30 pm). Deer Harbor Plan Review Committee (Deer Harbor Community Center). Meets second Wednesday of the month. Public is welcome.

· Thursday, March 11 (12 noon – 1:30 pm). Orcas Island Park & Recreation District (Eastsound Fire Station). Meets second Thursday of the month.

· Thursday, March 11 (7:00 pm). Port of Orcas Commissioners meeting (Airport conference room). Call 376-5285 for more information. Regularly meets on the second Thursday of the month.
