►2010 CENSUS – help san juan county earn its fair share!
Stand Up & Be Counted! Remember the U.S. 2010 Census will be taken with forms being mailed out in March. If you return your form by mail that is all that is needed from you. Returning the form will help our County receive the proper portion of money that we are entitled to based on population. The Federal Government distributes more than 400 Billion dollars annually to state, local and tribal governments based on Census data.

ORCAS ISLAND LADY VIKINGS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS GET UNDERWAY TODAY!

These amazing athletes take on Evergreen Lutheran in the first round of District playoffs. Last year, the Viking girls took 5th place in the State Tournament. Stop by the High School gym and cheer them on to victory!
ACTORS THEATER ANNOUNCES ‘NOISES OFF’ PRODUCTION @ THE GRANGE
(Kaleidoscope Benefit Performance Tonight @ 7:30 pm; Friday & Saturday Also!)
Considered by many to be the best farce written in the past hundred years, ‘Noises Off’ features a cast of locals and is directed by Doug Bechtel. Proceeds on Thursday, February 18 go to Kaleidoscope. Tickets for the “Sneak Preview” are $25 including beverages & dessert. Purchase tix from Kaleidoscope Board Members and at Darvill’s. Other performances: Friday and Saturday (2/19 & 2/20), and Friday – Sunday (2/26 – 2/28). Tickets are $10 at Darvill’s and at the door. All performances start at 7:30 pm.

SAN JUAN NATURE INSTITUTE LECTURE SERIES
(Thursday, February 18 @ 7 pm; at the Commons, UW Friday Harbor Labs)
Seasonal sea ice cover and the production of walleye pollock in the Bering Sea: Implications of global warming. George Hunt, UW School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science will be the guest speaker at the second Arthur Whiteley Lecture offered to the public by San Juan Nature Institute in collaboration with UW Friday Harbor Labs. There is no charge, though donations would be gratefully received.

Join the Doe Bay Café for a special performance by musician Shenandoah. “With a voice like an old timey fiddle, she adds on contrapuntal guitar, piano and xylophone parts to round out the subtle symphony.” In addition to collaborating with Seattle’s Grand Hallway and Jack Wilson, she has shared stages with The Lisps, Ian Cooke, The Maldives, and Paper Bird, and featured in The Stranger, Setlist, and Sound Magazine. ORCAS CENTER PRESENTS ACADEMY CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Orcas Center will present the Academy Chamber Orchestra on Saturday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. The performance will feature outstanding solo performances by gifted, award-winning young musicians, including Orcas Island’s Oliver Aldort (cello) and Marie Rossano (violin) from Seattle. Tickets are $25, $17 for Orcas Center members and $11 for students.

THE OFF-ISLANDERS TOTALLY IMPROVISED THEATER
(Saturdays, February 20 & 27 @ 7 pm, at Doe Bay)
Doe Bay is host to a fabulously funny group of improvisers from Seattle, San Francisco, and Melbourne, Australia known as, you guessed it, The Off-Islanders (they’re ‘just a little bit off’). The show will be held in Doe Bay’s Yoga Studio with admission being $1 and children half price. You can’t miss this show – these folks are hilarious! If you like to laugh, swing by Doe Bay and have yourself a laugh fest; all ages welcome. And don’t forget Doe Bay’s tasty treats at the Doe Bay Café before or after the show.

VISIONS OF A WATER RAT: BOATS & NATURE IN THE ISLANDS

Doe Bay is proud to host the work of local photographer Peter Fromm on display in the Café. Fromm is presenting a multi-media slide show in the Doe Bay Café Sunday evening as part of our ‘Sundays at the Movies’ series. BEGINNING DRAWING CLASS THE LAST WEEK OF FEBRUARY

Caroline Buchanan will offer a class for those who have always wanted to draw but think they haven’t the “talent.” Buchanan is convinced that it isn’t talent but rather not knowing how to look to be able to draw and what it is you need to do to succeed in drawing. FARM TO CAFETERIA PRESENTS CELEBRITY CHEF GEDDES MARTIN

Farm to Cafeteria presents another Celebrity Chef at the Orcas Island Public School Cafeteria. Chef Geddes Martin will prepare and serve Chicken and mashed potatoes on Thursday February 25th in the school cafeteria. Encourage your school children to eat “cafeteria” that day and join your children for this popular series!
